Course Description and Purpose.

A study of financial management and its application in the Hospitality Industry.  Topics include capital investment analysis, and current financial issues.  Emphasis is placed on maximizing shareholder’s value.

The overall goal of the course is to equip you with the skills to be able to increase the value of hospitality firms by understanding past performance and developing techniques that can be used to assess the firm future prospects.  This will necessitate (i) an understanding of fundamental accounting and finance concepts, (ii) collaborating within your classmates in groups (iii) learning more advanced Excel skills.  Throughout the semester, you are required to think about how to apply the material to an actual hospitality firm through the completion of a group project .

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

1. C01 Describe the 3 main financial statements - Income Statement, Balance Sheet & Cash flow Statement.
2. C02 Evaluate past financial performance of the firm using ratio analyses and common sized statements.
3. CO3 Create proforma statements by connecting the firm’s past performance with the external environment in  which the firm operates, to determine  the firm’s financing needs.
4. C04 Describe how risk can be reduced through diversification and the implication for how risk impacts the value of projects and hence the value of the firm
5. C05  Use discounted cashflow techniques to value and evaluate capital investments.
6. C06 Articulate the advantages and disadvantages of using discounted and non-discounted cash flow methodologies when evaluating capital investments.
7. C07 Explain how firms create value by managing firm growth.
8. C08  Design the optimal capital structure with capital market imperfections.
9. C09 Develop the skills needed to design Excel spreadsheets using advanced Excel functions.

1. Daily and before arriving to campus, complete the P3 app. If you are not given the green check mark to enter campus, then return home, and contact me by email.
2. Please check your FIU email account and your Canvas course at least once a day.  Email and Canvas are the best ways for the university, and your professors, to contact you.
3. If you do not feel well, have tested positive for COVID-19, or have been in contact with a person with COVID-19 while not yet being fully vaccinated, please do not come to class, immediately complete the P3 app to notify the COVID Response Team or call them at 305-348-1919, and contact me by email as soon as you can. In order to receive an excused absence for P3 failure/COVID-19, you must contact the COVID Response Team at 305-348-1919.  If you are directed to isolate or quarantine because of COVID-19, your absences will be considered excused. Students who are unable to complete assignments/tests will be required to submit the excused absence for P3 failure/COVID 19 and then be allowed to submit the missed assignments/tests at a later date without penalty. 
4. Per recent CDC guidelines, a vaccinated, asymptomatic individual exposed to a COVID-19 positive person does not need to isolate or quarantine. Nevertheless, it is strongly encouraged to continue to wear a mask. Furthermore, it is recommended to get tested 3-5 days after a known exposure. However, if at any time you become symptomatic, you need to test immediately. If the test returns positive, you will need to follow the COVID-19 positive protocol at that time.
   1. “Asymptomatic” means (of a condition or a person) producing or showing no symptoms.
   2. “Symptomatic” means exhibiting or involving symptoms.
   3. People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Anyone can have mild to severe symptoms. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
      • Fever or chills
      • Cough
      • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
      • Fatigue
      • Muscle or body aches
      • Headache
      • New loss of taste or smell
      • Sore throat
      • Congestion or runny nose
      • Nausea or vomiting
      • Diarrhea
5. Please take every precaution to keep yourself and others healthy. Per CDC guidelines, you are encouraged to get vaccinated and strongly advised to wear a mask indoors and in public including all FIU facilities.  
6. Missing excessive days may lead to failing a class or a grade of incomplete.

8. Please be advised that class content may be subject to streaming or course capture for future access by students in this course. Your attendance/participation in this course constitutes consent to such recording.

One of the greatest barriers to taking an online course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy, we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently and learning to use your computer's operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course, but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Students are expected to:

• review the getting started page located in the course modules;
• take the practice quiz to ensure that your computer is compatible with the learning management system, Canvas;
• interact with instructor and peers;
• review and follow the course calendar and weekly outlines;
• log in to the course 5 times per week;
• respond to emails within 2 days; 
• submit assignments by the corresponding deadline

The instructor will:

• log in to the course 6 times week;
• respond to emails within 24 hours on weekdays and 48 on weekends
• grade assignments within 5 days of the assignment deadline.

Communication in this course will take place via the Canvas Inbox. Check out the Canvas Conversations Tutorial or Canvas Guide to learn how to communicate with your instructor and peers using Announcements, Discussions, and the Inbox. I will respond to all correspondences within 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on weekends.

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will likely be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post.

In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is very important that you take the "Practice Quiz" from each computer you will be using to take your graded quizzes and exams. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.

All assessments will auto-submit when (1) the timer runs out OR (2) the closing date/time is reached, whichever happens first. For example, if a quiz has a closing time of 5:00 pm but the student begins the exam at 4:55 pm, the student will only have 5 minutes to complete the quiz.

• Individual Proforma excel assignment - Due midnight on October 10.  Scores will be available October 15
• Individual Capital Budgeting excel assignment - Due midnight on November 14.   Scores will be available November 19
• Exam #1 will be available  during regularly scheduled class time.  Scores will be available 5 days later.
• Exam # 2 will be available  as per final exam schedule.  Scores will be available 5 days later.
• Group Part 1- Due  at midnight September 26. Scores will be available on  October 1
• Group Part 2 - Due  at midnight October 17.  Scores will be available on  October 22.
• Group Part 3 - Due  at midnight November 21.  Scores will be available on November 26
• Group Final Project - Due  at midnight December 4. Scores will be available on December 9

Assessments in this course are not compatible with mobile devices and should not be taken through a mobile phone or a tablet. If you need further assistance please contact FIU Canvas Help Team.

Zoom is a video conference tool that you can use to interact with your professor and fellow students by sharing screens, chatting, broadcasting live video/audio, and taking part in other interactive online activities.  This tool will be utilized on an as needed basis. 

Zoom meetings can be accessed via the Zoom link in the course navigation menu. Once you click on the Zoom link, it will route you to join the meeting for the respective class session. You will also be able to view upcoming meetings, previous meetings that you have already joined, and meeting recordings. Before joining an actual class session:

• Reference the Zoom Student Tutorials to learn about the tool, how to access your meeting room, and share your screen.
• Access the Zoom Test Meeting Room to test out the software before joining an actual session.
